Job Description:

The White House Commission on Remembrance is looking for a dedicated intern to assist with marketing its message "Live honoring America's fallen." The intern will work primarily on publicizing the National Moment of Remembrance, but will also assist with other ceremonies and events. Duties include: building relationships with major sports franchises and businesses, contacting local and national media outlets, and assisting in the development of the website (from a graphical/content perspective; technical knowledge is not required). Interns must have excellent presentation skills, and knowledge of media relations and marketing as they have to clearly communicate information effectively and persuasively. Interns with exceptional creativity and skill in the Graphic Design field will also develop graphics and layouts for product illustrations, logos, and the website. We welcome all applicants who have demonstrated academic excellence and have displayed a commitment to public service. The Commission is pleased to work with your college or university to ensure that the internship meets any requirements established to qualify for academic credit. The Commission reviews applications on a bi-monthly basis and encourages applicants to apply early as internship positions are limited and competitive. Domino

It's starting to get cooler outside, so you may be thinking about things you can do inside. I've been eyeing this book for a couple of months now, and I finally got it. Since we no longer have Domino magazine to swoon over each month this is the next best thing: Domino: The Book of Decorating. I'm loving the wealth of information in this book, but it still leaves me wanting more. Hmm...maybe...hopefully, Domino magazine will come back.

 

Natural hair illustrations

In an attempt to resurrect my drawing skills, I've decided to draw a few items that are a regular part of my "Saturday" morning (which isn't always Saturday morning). My challenge is to "draw more expressively." But, as Milton Glaser said in the video from my October 13th post, "you have to learn to draw accurately before you can think about drawing expressively." I do know that some of my work—in my high school years—had a touch of humor. Maybe I'll start to work from what I know.

My name—inspired by Frank Stella

I love talking to my parents and learning a little bit more about myself—like one of the inspirations behind my name.

One night, my Dad—who was a painter when I was little—created a painting that was inspired by Frank Stella's Tahki-I-Sulayman I (1967). Thus, "Derilyn" was born. My "D" painting—as I call it—was different from Stella's of course. The layout of the "Ds" were different, and I remember my Dad used a lot of greens and yellows.

From what I remember, my Dad's paintings were usually realistic, and he painted with oils, watercolors, some acrylic, charcoal pencils, or conté (what I used to call his French crayons). He drew from live subjects or he would take a photograph of something he saw, draw it, and paint it.

Although my parents no longer have that "D" painting my Dad painted that night, I remember it fondly.

Milton Glaser on drawing

I found this wonderfully inspirational video on DRAWN! It's Milton Glaser drawing and talking about the act of drawing. I love that he says that you have to learn to draw accurately before you can think about drawing expressively. Thanks Mr. Glaser! Back to the drawing board!

Miss Shirley's Café

I visited my sister over Columbus Day weekend, and she treated me to a wonderful brunch—Miss Shirley's Café in Baltimore. We had to pay homage to our southern roots. Unfortunately, because I was so hungry, I didn't think to take photos of the meal, but it looks and tastes really good. Want to know why Chicago lost the bid?

I was originally really excited about the possibility of the Olympic games coming to Chicago, but I never quite felt the spirit of the city's support. And, after considering the rough economic times the U.S. has been going through, I wasn't quite sure that I was ready to fork over additional funds. People are saying that they don't quite understand why Chicago wasn't chosen. After viewing the presentations by Chicago and Rio de Janeiro, it seems pretty clear to me. Rio gave solid reasons of how Rio is different from any other bidding city. Chicago's presentation, sorry to say, seemed a bit flat to me. It didn't quite represent what Chicago has to offer that you can't find anywhere else. It seemed to speak more to an American audience than an international audience. I would want to know, what makes Chicago different enough for me to fly half way across the world to want to visit. There are so many people in Chicago that speak different languages. Why wasn't that represented in the videos? Based on purely the videos—which I admit, isn't the best way to pick—I'd have picked Rio too. Check out Rio de Janeiro Blue by Randy Crawford on iTunes.

Anyway, I love Chicago, but unfortunately, I think it came up a bit short on the presentation. Check out Chicago's as well as the presentation of the other bidding cities to see how they compare/contrast from ABC 7 Chicago.
